Lifting

Also known as: Lifting off the seat, Physical advantage

A wheelchair basketball rule: stay in your seat.

The rule

A wheelchair player may not raise their bottom off the seat to shoot, rebound, pass or block a shot. Lifting the whole chair off the floor with both hands off the wheels is also not allowed.

The penalty

Technical foul: 1 free throw, and the team that had the ball keeps it.

The reason

Rising out of the seat gives extra height that other players can’t match. Keeping everyone seated keeps the classification system fair.

Around the leagues

  • Technical foul: Wheelchair
  • Not part of the game: NBA, WNBA, FIBA, NCAA M, NCAA W, 3x3. Only wheelchair basketball has it.
