Coach’s Challenge
Also known as: Replay challenge, Coaches’ appeal, HCC
When a coach can ask the referees to check the video.
The rule
A head coach can ask the referees to review a call on video. If the video clearly shows the call was wrong, it’s changed. Only certain calls can be challenged, and each rulebook limits how often.
The penalty
A failed challenge usually costs a timeout.
The reason
Replay fixes clear mistakes on calls that decide games, while the limits stop coaches from pausing play for every close call.
Around the leagues
- 1, plus 1 if it wins: NBA, WNBA. Called with a timeout. Only for a foul called on your own team, out of bounds, or goaltending and basket interference.
- 1, plus 1 if it wins: NCAA M. You need a timeout left. For out of bounds, goaltending, basket interference and restricted-area calls.
- No limit: NCAA W. A lost appeal costs a timeout, or a technical foul if none are left. For out of bounds, backcourt calls, possession before a foul and who a foul was charged to.
- 1 per game: FIBA, Wheelchair. Only in games with video replay. No timeout needed, and you don’t get another one even if it wins.
- None: 3x3. Coaches aren’t allowed at 3x3 games, so nobody can challenge.
