Carrying

Also known as: Palming, Carry

Letting the ball rest in your hand mid-dribble.

The rule

While dribbling, a player may not put a hand under the ball and carry it, or let it come to a rest in the hand and then keep dribbling. The ball has to be bounced, not held and pushed along.

The penalty

The ball goes to the other team for a throw-in (a check-ball in 3x3).

The reason

A carried dribble is really holding the ball while moving. It would let a dribbler change direction with full control, without the risk of the ball being stolen that a true bounce gives the defense.
